Four Gracious Plants have traditionally been the favorite themes in Korean ink painting. They consist of plum which blossoms in snow and announces the coming of spring with its fine scent, orchid which blooms alone in deep valleys scattering its exquisite flagrance, chrysanthemum which reveals its pure flowers despite the early frosts of late autumn, and bamboo which keeps its leaves green even in the cold of winter. They each represent the personality of learned and virtuous Confucian sages, and so came to be called Four Gracious Plants.
