Unlike typical Korean masks made from gourd or paper, Hahoe Mask is made of alder wood, with several coats of lacquering and elaborate painting. The separate jaw part came with hinges allowing for lively mouth movement during performance. Hahoe Masks were used in the Byeolsin Gut held on the first full moon of the year. They are designated as national treasures, and come in 11 characters, with yangbantal(nobleman) and baekjeongtal (butcher) being the most striking examples of original expression.
