Hangul, the Korean alphabet was invented by the Great King Sejong in 1443, and consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Hangul consonants include velar sounds(ㄱ,ㅋ), tongue sounds(ㄷ,ㅌ,ㅅ,ㄹ,ㄴ), lip sounds(ㅂ,ㅍ,ㅁ) and guttural sounds(ㅎ,ㅇ). Each consonant combines with a vowel to form a letter equivalent to a syllable, enabling Hangul to indicate many different sounds. Hangul alphabets are derived from simple horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines and circles, so they are readily identifiable and hence easily learned.
