The Great King Sejong proclaimed Hunminjeongeum the Korean alphabet, in 1443, so that common people would be able to express themselves freely in writing. Originally consisting of 17 consonants and 11 vowels, Hunminjeongeum eventually develped into todays Hangul, a scientific and highly effective system of writing that is readily identifiable and hence easily learned.
